committed to our communities logo

NewRiver has today released its Environmental, Social & Governance (‘ESG’) Report 2020. The report outlines the significant progress we have made against our ESG objectives during the year and underscores our commitment to enhancing the communities we serve and minimising our impact on the environment.

During the year, our achievements were recognised by GRESB, the leading sustainability benchmark for the global real estate sector, with the receipt of a GRESB Green Star and a GRESB Score that marks a 13% improvement from the prior year and a 94% improvement from our first entry into the benchmark in 2016.

Allan Lockhart, Chief Executive commented: “A commitment to our communities is central to NewRiver’s culture, strategy and operations. This commitment has gained even more relevance in recent months, as we witnessed the devasting economic and social impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on our communities, and I was humbled to see all our stakeholders step up to help those most in need. Our ESG achievements during the year are testament to the hard work and dedication of our staff, occupiers and advisers, and I would like to thank them all for their unwavering support as we continue our sustainability journey.”

Emma Mackenzie, Head of ESG commented: “I am delighted to present our ESG Report for 2020, our most active year to date. A highlight of the year was the signing of our corporate charity partnership with the UK’s largest foodbank operator, the Trussell Trust, and we’ve achieved much more in addition - raising over £750,000 for charity across our assets, introducing new initiatives to support the mental and physical wellbeing of our staff, and setting ambitious new environmental targets across our portfolio. I look forward to the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead, and to continuing to work with all our stakeholders to ensure a sustainable future.”

Our £1.1 billion portfolio covers 9 million sq ft and comprises 33 community shopping centres, 24 conveniently located retail parks and around 700 community pubs. We hand-picked our assets to deliberately focus on occupiers providing essential goods and services, and avoid structurally challenged sub-sectors such as department stores, mid-market fashion and casual dining. This focus, combined with our affordable rents and desirable locations, delivers sustainable and growing returns for our shareholders, while our active approach to asset management and inbuilt 2.6 million sq ft development pipeline provide further opportunities to extract value from our portfolio.
