NewRiver is pleased to announce that its Race Against Hunger event in June raised a total of £66,320 for its charitable partner, the Trussell Trust, further contributing to the important work the charity does to help end hunger in the UK.

Over 30 NewRiver team members each ran 10km to raise an initial target of £30,000 and thanks to the team’s efforts and the generous donations of NewRiver friends and corporate contacts we have more doubled that target. NewRiver gives special thanks to all of its corporate donors.

NewRiver has partnered with the Trussell Trust since 2019, raising a total of £442,185, collecting 9.5 tonnes of food across the food banks in our portfolio and helping raise awareness of the Trussell Trust’s vision for a UK without the need for food banks. NewRiver’s partnership with the Trussell Trust provides space and time as well as cash donations.

During the current challenging economic climate, post pandemic and with the increasing cost of living and energy crisis, the Trussell Trust’s work has never been more important, also providing financial advice, tailored support and critical care in the community alongside its food banks. Last year, the Trussell Trust’s 1,300 UK-wide food bank network distributed over 2.5 million emergency food parcels to people in crisis - 980,000 of these parcels went to children. When compared to 5 years ago, the need for Trussell Trust food banks has increased by c.80%.

NewRiver shares the Trussell Trust’s belief that no one should have to use a food bank just to get by and we are proud to confirm our continued partnership with the Trussell Trust again this year, supporting their hard work to reduce poverty and hunger and create a future where food banks are no longer required.

Allan Lockhart, CEO, NewRiver, said: “It is our honour to help raise funds and to donate our time and space to this important UK charity, especially with the increasing cost of living and energy crisis. Everyday people across the UK have reported to the Trussell Trust that they are skipping meals to ensure their children are fed and are turning off essential appliances so they can afford internet access for their children to do their homework. The work of the Trussell Trust is trying to reverse this and we are proud to contribute to their efforts. I would like to thank the NewRiver team and our generous friends and corporate partners who helped us raise these critical funds and we are delighted to continue our partnership with The Trussell for another year.”

Emma Revie, Chief Executive of the Trussell Trust said: “More and more food banks in our network are telling us that families up and down the country are having to choose between putting food on the table or being able to take a hot shower as a result of a rapid rise in the cost of living the nation is facing. The incredible support of NewRiver will play a vital role in making sure food banks can continue to provide emergency food and advice to people who are left with no option but to use a food bank because their money simply won’t stretch. We are so grateful to NewRiver for their continued support while we work in the long term to build a future without the need for food banks.”
